And but one word with one of us? couple it with
something; make it a word and a blow.

- William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

There seems little point in practicing magic unless you want to do at least a few extraordinary things with this incarnation.

-Peter J Carroll, The Octavo

Like “love,” “hope” is one of those ridiculously disproportional words that by all rights should be a lot longer.

- Jim Butcher, Turn Coat

The starry-eyed idealists of today have submerged their critical faculties beneath a tidal wave of slop marketed by those old hippies who now sell a user-friendly dilution of their original enlightenment.

-Peter J Caroll, Psybermagick

Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind,
And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.

- William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream

Behind the clock back there you know
At the four winds bar

- Blue Öyster Cult, Astronomy

Offering's a complicated business.

- Jake Stratton-Kent

Another related point is that theological eclecticism to the tune of replacing this structure with pagan deities so it appeals to personal taste does the ritualist no favours as it undermines their ability to leverage a power dynamic that is better understood and has been employed countless times.

- Julio Cesar Ody, Magister Officiorum

Only fluffy bunnies need apply.

- Jake Stratton-Kent

Now moves. Even in storytime, dreamtime, once-upon-a time, now isn’t then.

- Ursula K. le Guin

...the practioners of magic have always been syncretists, experimenting intraculturally and sticking with what worked.

- Michael M. Hughes, Magic for the Resistance
#MagicResistance

Bakery and metallurgy are just different applications of alchemy, and all three are closer together in practice and mystery than most people might expect.

Magical Diary

chaos wizard gun in one hand magic in the other

Though one may get to fear the sight of it, a properly kept magical record is the surest guarantor of success in the work of Liber MMM: it is both a work of reference with which to evaluate progress and most significantly, a goad to further effort. - Liber Null

I don't think Uncle Pete would approve, and this is not really my magical diary (you wouldn't want to see those mad scribblings), but you will find here a collection of various writings, rituals, prayers and recipes.

I am, at heart, a syncretist. And before you go all CMG on me for labeling myself, labels are convenient. They will never capture our true essence, but they help to distill it down so that we actually have something to talk about. Like most good wizards (Fuck you Rufus Opus), I beg borrow and steal from what works: grimoires, the PGM, Tarot, Astrology...all done, probably, with a tad too much devotionalism to suit Gordon White. That said, I find myself more aligned with what Wizard White has called "Third Wave" Chaos Magic: a chaos that that doesn't dispense with the past so much (and makes a lot less use of Superman and Cthulhu), while still keeping a rigorous eye on the bottom line: does it work.

Join me in my little part of the Re-enchanting the World project.

The Forty Servants

I've done quite a bit of work with The Forty Servants Magic and Divination System, created by Tommie Kelly. Of course, you can follow the link to find out more, but for the sake of brevity: its a collection of servitors (a chaos magic concept) printed in the form of an oracle deck that can be used both for various magical operations and divination. At one point, I called it a modern grimoire and I stand by that statement. Like most grimoires, its a framework for you to build on (go ahead, tell me any grimoire is a complete system unto itself).

You can find my Initiation of the Messenger over at Adventures in Woo Woo, where it was featured as the first in the Other Voices section.  You can find my other work on the Forty Servants here, including the Initiation of the Witch.

Were You a Weird Kid?

I recognize that I am taking on some serious flavor from Rune Soup at the moment, but I don't think I can be accused of having taken on a guru. But if it starts to seem that way, please be sure to let me know to find my own rabbit hole, quick.

Prayer to Mary and the Archangel Michael

I will praise Thee, O God, in the sight of Thy Angels.

O Mary Immaculate, great Queen of Heaven and earth and our gentle advocate, we beg Thee to intercede for us. Pray God to send St. Michael and the holy Angels to ward off all the obstacles contrary to the reign of the Sacred Heart in our souls, our families, our country and in the whole world. And thou, O holy Michael, Prince of the Heavenly hosts, chief among the archons of this world, from our hearts we beg thee to come to our aid. Sovereign Principalities, you who are the Princes of Nations, we beseech you to guard our country effectively, that it may realize God’s designs in its regard. St. Michael, the Archangel, and all ye Holy Angels, protect us in our combats, that we may not perish in the tremendous judgment of God.

Entities?

I've invoked a few divinities, with varying success. I've created a handful of servitors that more often than not did what they were told. I have never summoned anything, deliberately. I have never attempted to contact an intelligence or other entity, at least not consciously.

What I Believe

This is for my mother in law, who I love dearly even if we rarely see eye-to-eye and have a tendency to drive each other crazy.

After nearly twenty years with my partner, she asked me yesterday: do you believe in God? It was a bad place and time for the question, and I didn't handle it well (blame the shooting pains in my shoulder and arm if you will, it'd be a nice out for me if not an honest one), starting down the road of what I don't believe instead of what I do believe.  Never a good way to begin, nor to win friends.

So, here's a distillation of what I believe.

  • I do indeed believe in God; several in fact.
  • I believe in God the unknowable, the ineffable spark of all life and creation.
  • I believe in The God and The Goddess, our Divine Parents... the first division of the ineffable spark, the dynamic opposites of Male and Female, Positive and Negative that the Universe shows us are the basic building blocks of all things.
  • I believe that the Divine has many names, wears many faces; that it exists within all things, and especially within us, Their Children.
  • I find the Divine in the World and Universe around me, and also in the deep, still spaces within.
  • I believe that the Names by which I call the Divine were revealed to me for a reason: Hermes/Thoth, Isis and Osiris, Horus.

That's just a list of things... it barely touches upon what moves me. I pray, not every day, but I pray.  Most often I pray to Holy Mother Isis, because I have felt Her wings about me in times of need and genuine despair. When She moves within me, I am a better person.

In the end, the fundamentals of what I believe are not so different, really, from that espoused by the Christian faiths. We have many things in common, and hold many of the same things in esteem. We call The Divine by different names, and outwardly worship in different ways, but we're really not that much different.
